Before deciding to enter the world of modeling and become a model, you must take a serious look at the steps you need to complete to succeed. There are sacrifices to be made, but, they are definitely worth the rewards. Our checklist will help you decide if modeling is for you, as well as help jump start your career!
The decision to become a model is not one that should be taken lightly. It is a tough career choice that is focused entirely on how you look and carry yourself. You have to have thick skin, a positive attitude and a drive to succeed and never give up, no matter how tough the road gets. However, if you achieve your goals, the rewards of becoming a model are fantastic: it is a fun, challenging and creative job where you are paid well, get to travel and experience a world most others just dream of.
If you still want to be a model, you need to prepare for the journey ahead. There are numerous factors to take into consideration.
Your body – There are many different types of modeling careers. You do not need to be stick thin to be a model, but, you do need to be in shape.
Your skin – Acne is never beautiful. Treat it with over the counter products or see your dermatologist for a prescription. Drink plenty of fluids to keep your skin hydrated and healthy, avoid cigarettes and alcohol, which will age your skin, and always wear sunscreen to prevent premature aging from the sun.
Your attitude – The days of the prima donna, demanding model are over. As a model, you need to be willing to do everything possible in order to fulfill the photographer’s vision. Happily comply with all requests made of you, even if you do not understand why (within ethical and moral guidelines, of course). Your modelling job is to be in the picture/commercial; not understand why it is important for you to hold the product in a certain way so the light hits it just right.
Your schooling – Most models start young. If you succeed in the modeling industry, you will most likely be required to travel. Make alternative arrangements for your schooling at those times, but, do not give up on it completely! Success in the modelling world is not guaranteed and those who make enough money to support themselves for the remainder of their lives are very few and far between. Make sure you have an education to fall back on.
Your skills – You should constantly be attending a modeling school to improve your runway, posing, acting and deportment skills. You can never know too much!
Your pictures – Your modeling pictures are your calling card. You need to put together a professional portfolio and zed card showcasing your different looks. You will use these to get an agent and book jobs.
Your Modeling Agency – You can find modeling jobs on your own by looking online, but, the best way to get started is to get a reputable agent. You can find these by looking online and seeing who is looking for new clients and by attending model searches. Always do your research before signing, though, to make sure the agency has a good reputation.
Your availability – Casting calls and jobs are often booked at the last minute. If you have a job or other commitment, you need to have the flexibility to leave at a moment’s notice for an audition or job.
